Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan Awarded Respiratory Failure Certification from The Joint Commission
Certification Signifies Hospital’s Dedication to Better Results for Respiratory Failure Patients
DETROIT, Mich., June 24, 2022 – Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan, a critical care hospital provider with locations in both Taylor and Detroit, has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease-Specific Respiratory Failure Certification.
The certification establishes Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan as a recognized center of excellence for ventilator weaning and management. Certification is voluntary and given only after a rigorous onsite review of a hospital’s practices, programs, and outcomes.
“We have effectively integrated evidence-based clinical guidelines to manage and optimize care,” said Laura Copat, MHA, MN, BSN, RN, WCC, the hospital’s market director of quality, risk management, and compliance. “Respiratory failure certification represents our commitment to continuous performance measurement and improvement. It holds us to the highest standards to ensure we’re providing the best care possible for our respiratory failure patients,” Copat explained.
Respiratory failure is a serious condition that develops when the lungs have difficulty getting oxygen to the blood or removing carbon dioxide from the body. The condition has many potential causes, including:
- Diseases and conditions that affect the lungs, such as COPD, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, and COVID-19
- Severe infections and sepsis
- Conditions that affect the nerves and muscles that control breathing, such as ALS, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and stroke
- Chest trauma
- Inhalation of toxic substances
- Drug and alcohol abuse or overdose
Patients suffering from respiratory failure often have complex care needs, which can include invasive or non-invasive ventilator management and weaning, tracheostomy care, high-flow oxygen, IV medication management, continuous cardiopulmonary monitoring, and intensive respiratory therapy. Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan specializes in care for critically and chronically ill individuals with such needs.
“As a critical care hospital that specializes in treating patients with pulmonary diagnoses and complex respiratory care needs, it’s our responsibility to provide our patients with their best possible opportunity for recovery,” added Abir Mehanna, MHA, market CEO of Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan. “This certification provided by The Joint Commission lets our patients, their families, and our community know that we are setting the standard of care for respiratory failure. We are proud to be able to provide this nationally recognized level of care here in Southeastern Michigan.”
