Catherine Muscat

While Catherine Muscat managed chronic lung disease, she lived an active, independent life at home. She cherished time with her husband and daughter, and she always enjoyed connecting with the people around her.

One day while eating, Catherine experienced a sudden medical emergency. Her husband found her in distress and unable to speak. Believing she might be choking, he immediately tried to help and called 911. Although Catherine was initially able to speak briefly with emergency responders, her condition quickly worsened.

At the emergency department, Catherine became unresponsive. She required a ventilator to help her breathe and experienced cardiac arrest, requiring CPR and emergency treatment to restore a stable heart rhythm.

After receiving life-saving care and completing the first phase of her hospitalization, Catherine’s care team referred her to Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Michigan – Taylor Campus, a critical care hospital specializing in complex recovery and ventilator management.

When Catherine first arrived at Vibra Hospital, she had significant respiratory and physical weakness. She depended on her care team for all mobility and activities of daily living. Even basic activities required her to take extended rest breaks.

With support from physician specialists, respiratory therapy, nursing, wound care, pharmacy, and nutrition, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, Catherine worked toward her goals one step at a time. She built strength and endurance while learning strategies to help her manage fatigue and continue making progress.

Her persistence led to meaningful gains. During her stay at Vibra Hospital, Catherine regained mobility, began talking again, and progressed to eating a regular diet. Her determination and progress along the way inspired those around her.
